  • Florence Beatrice Smith Price (1887-1953) was the first African American female composer of orchestral music.  Her Symphony in E Minor won first prize at the Wanamaker Foundation Awards and was performed in 1933 by The Chicago Symphony. The 40-minute concert was the first major orchestral performance of work by an African American woman. She completed over 300 compositions during her lifetime.
